PUNCH4NFDI members at the University of Bielefeld support FAIR data in large research projects

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has invested lots of money for the development of new European Flagship systems for HPC in the past years. Since June 2023 the Systems LUMI in Finland and Leonardo in Italy are now number three and four on the Top500 List of the most powerful HPC systems in the world. (The first and second places are occupied by Frontier in the US and Fugaku in Japan.) In the first round of applications for EuroHPC Extreme Scale Access on these machines the Bielefeld researchers Dr. Olaf Kaczmarek and Dr. Christian Schmidt-Sonntag have been successful. Their applications were competitive among many applications and were selected for two extreme scale computing projects, which were awarded 60 Mill. core-hours on LUMI-G and 22 Mill. core-hours on Leonardo (corresponding to the yearly compute power of approximately 20000, respectively 6000 laptop computers). The computing time will contribute to their research on matter under extreme conditions, which refers to temperatures and particle densities present, e.g. in our universe shortly after the Big Bang or during heavy ion collisions generated and measured at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The research is part of the Collaborative Research Center CRC-TR 211 (“Strong-Interaction Matter under Extreme Conditions”) of university groups in Bielefeld, Darmstadt and Frankfurt a.M..

The large amount of data generated in the two projects will be further analyzed on the Bielefeld GPU Cluster and all data and results shall become openly available via the PUNCH4NFDI science data platform (SDP). The highly optimized GPU software, SIMULATeQCD, that is used in both projects was developed under the lead of Olaf Kaczmarek and Christian Schmidt-Sonntag by the HotQCD collaboration with the support of the software development center of the CRC-TR211 and PUNCH4NFDI. It is published as open source and was recently awarded for an extraordinary support program by Euro-HPC. Both researchers are part of the PUNCH4NFDI consortium.
